Description
The goal of this tool kit training is to provide a basic knowledge of advocacy and awareness skills for people of all works of life that are interested in learning about autism and other special developmental needs. The training will show how to apply these skills to different situations, give you a sensory insight on what autism is, and how to interact with an individual with autism. The training is of two part; One part is the ABCs of Autism while the other part is on Community Advocacy.
Individuals with autism (especially those diagnosed as severe) face significant barriers and are especially vulnerable because of their challenges with communication and social interaction, therefore greater reliance on others for aid is inevitable. It is also critical to develop advocacy strategies to meet the needs of adults with autism, (we all love children but they grow; and grow up into adults) as well as to support them as they become more self-determined to succeed in a society like ours. Who will advocate for adults who are non-verbal, autistic and seen in a wrong assuming way without knowledge of their diagnosis? Is the Public well informed?
As a first step in the advocacy learning process, we will touch on issues of key federal legislations if any and policy reforms that has been passed to support individuals with disabilities and sensory difficulties. Indeed, our success in advocacy as family members, professionals, community leaders and fellow citizens depends upon informing ourselves of basic rights, information and building consciousness through trainings such as this.
